How to be Wedding DJ?

This is the age of specialisation and so wedding DJs have become indispensable. More and more weddings now have a dance program where they need a DJ. In India every DJ needs to bone up on wedding parties. If you are starting out, we give you some pointers.

Get the equipment
The first step for any DJ is to get all the equipment. An essential part of this is investing in a good quality DJ sound system. If you cannot buy this, go for rented equipment till you build your own supply. Weddings do not always need atmospheric or light equipments. So make the sound system your priority.

Create a bank
While you get yourself sorted, start on your song bank of DH music. Luckily there are a number of Hindi songs that fit the wedding mood. Although some clients will give you their preferred list, it is always a good idea to keep your own bank for emergencies. A good DJ wills also want personalise the music by adding beats or scratching. In India people many also prefer regional music. So it is a good idea to do some research on regional music.

Practise
Nothing makes you perfect as practise. Even if you are just starting out and have no clients, keep practising your craft. Keep your DJ music ready and play it. Get your family and friends to judge your performance. This way when you eventually do land a gig, you will be far better prepared and confident of yourself.

Network
Being a DJ is much like running a business. The onus of developing it also lies with you. So keep networking wherever possible. Get some business cards ready and distribute it to related businesses like marriage planner, pandits, the decorator and everyone else you can think of. Another step is to form a website. Today almost everything is searched online, including wedding DJs. Keep you website updated and network with others on the internet.

Today wedding DJs can get support from a number of agencies like Global Sound Management. Run by DJ Gaurav Malvai, it provides sound, light and music support for both wedding and corporate events. You can visit them at www.globalsoundmanagement.com
